Stealthy and powerful, a black panther (Mountain-lion, puma or cougar) has been carved from jet by Herbert Halate. Around the age of eleven or twelve, Herbert Halate learned the art of fetish carving by watching his father Leonard Halate (d), an earlier and noted carver from Zuni. Herbert's sisters Reva, Vella, Marvelita and Pansy are also artists.
Incised whiskers, attentive eyes from inlaid turquoise and a double point offering bundle with marble and turquoise grace this robust 9" long, 1 1/2" wide and 2 3/4" great feline. Herbert's polishing work is lustrous.
