This magnificent Bear
is carved of a fantastic lava stone found by
Wilson Romero on the Cochiti Pueblo lands. The volcanic stone or scoria has incredible voids like Swiss cheese. The holes were formed when the rock was still hot magma bubbling with pockets of gas that were trapped as the molten rock cooled. The piece has a smooth shape but still retains the natural rough texture of the stone and some of the vesicles still have lichen growing inside. The hefty bear measures about 4" tall, 1 3/4" wide by 3 1/2" deep.
