A nocturnal and capable hunter, an Owl with a turned head calmly perches while awaiting the right moment to act. These fascinating raptors do most of their work at night. The Zuni Pueblo people refer to an owl as "the Night Grandfather" because of this. Etched plumage is fine and turquoise inlaid eyes see everything. The two feather tufts above the eyes are gorgeously done. About 3 1/4" tall, 2" wide and 1 5/8" deep, carved by Derrick Kaamasee from an attractive Picasso marble.

Derrick's uncles are well-known carvers Maxx Laate and Pernell Laate (d). Derrick started carving around 1989 and because of his uncle's encouragement, he continued in the art. He once said "I like to do things in the old way, but with more detail...things that have action in them." He's taught many others the art of fetish carving, including Destry Siutza.
