By Brandon Phillips

Animal: Hummingbird, Material: Alabaster
This offering is sold.

Hummingbirds are found only in the western hemisphere so many stories about these tiny warrior birds exist in Indigenous beliefs. The Chayma People of Trinidad believe that hummingbirds are dead ancestors and it is improper to harm them. Ancient Mayan legend tells of a hummingbird piercing the tongue of age-old kings. When the blood was drizzled on sacred scrolls and burned, divine ancestors manifested in the smoke. Brandon Phillips' sun-kissed alabaster Hummingbird has graceful contours to a size of approximately 2 3/8" tall, 5/8" wide and 1 1/4" deep. Eyes are from sky-blue turquoise, while a pointy beak is from pink mussel shell.
