Desert Dolomite Whale

By Melvin Sandoval, San Felipe-Zuni

Animal: Whale, Material: Dolomite
This offering is sold.
Melvin Sandoval's dolomite whale reminds us of the newly-discovered species of prehistoric whale found in a fossil bed in the remote Ica desert of Peru. Millions of years ago, this desert in Peru was a gathering place for fantastical sea creatures including whales. New Mexico, much like Peru, is rich with fossils dating back 250 million years ago when the land was covered by a shallow sea. The creamy-peach dolomite Melvin chose for this whimsical sea mammal was formed around the same time making it a perfect match for a desert whale. About 5" long, 1 1/2" wide, and 3/4" tall.
