Buns in the Oven

By Erma Kalestewa Homer

This offering is sold.

This adorable little pottery piece from Erma Kalestewa Homer is a replica of the traditional outdoor ovens seen in Zuni and other Pueblos. In Zuni the oven is called hebok'onne, which refers to the convex shape of the mud used in making the structure. Erma even placed two traditionally shaped bread loaves (hebok'o:muwe) inside the oven. The outside of the oven is painted by hand with natural mineral paints featuring Deer with heartline as well as the stylized floret. The hand formed clay pottery oven measures about 2 3/8" in diameter and 1 5/8" tall and is signed by the artist.
