Derrick comes from the extended Laate family of Zuni carvers. He started carving in the late 1980's and he's inspired other family members to carve. His brother is artist Elton Kaamasee and his uncle is Maxx Laate, who taught Derrick the art form.

An ant colony is one living organism that functions because of the work of its entire community. However the colony is nothing without the individual ant. Derrick's marvelous pipestone ant has turquoise inlaid eyes and measures about 2 1/2" long, 3/4" wide and 1 1/8" tall. Its antennae are nicely incised.
