Beloved Belgian Marble Raven

By Nelson Yatsattie

Animal: Raven, Material: Belgian Marble
This offering is sold.

Belgian black marble is rare making it one of the most expensive marbles in the world. The use of Belgian black marble goes back to ancient times, from the Roman Empire through the Renaissance, and up to the Art Deco period. The rock is actually not a true marble which is a metamorphic rock, but a type of limestone, a sedimentary rock. Nelson Yatsattie's observant Raven (or crow) has been smoothly sculpted from Belgian marble that's been sgraffito etched producing elegantly layered plumage. Eyes are alert, from turquoise inlays. About 1 3/4" long, 1" wide and 2 3/8" tall.
