Bear Ancestor

By Cameron Kalestewa

Animal: Bear, Material: Zuni Travertine
This offering is sold.

Zuni travertine is found locally at Zuni Pueblo. Cameron Kalestewa's turquoise-eyed Bear is smoothly sculpted from golden Zuni travertine to a dimension of approximately 2 1/4" long, 1" wide and 1 3/8" tall. A heartline or breath path is inlaid with colorful turquoise chip. Many Pueblo cultures consider bears as kin, powerful members of the family to be respected. Indigenous teachings about kinship with the natural world reveals that we miss out on a lot of positive interactions when we adopt antagonistic attitudes toward wildlife.
