In Zuni fetishes, a Corn-maiden symbolizes potential and is usually carved emerging from corn with etched corn kernels on her body. Traditionally whorled hair on either side of the head signifies that she has not had a baby. Danette Laate's wonderful picture jasper corn maiden is represented with much detail. Facial features and pretty earrings are inlaid with turquoise, while a Zuni Sunface from jet, coral and turquoise represents the elements in balance. Turquoise, coral and jet flower inlays adorn her corn body and shawl. About 2 3/4" tall, 7/8" wide and 1/2" deep.
