There are five species of prairie dogs whose biological relatives include chipmunks, groundhogs, woodchucks and marmots. Their squeaky calls might sound repetitive but are actually descriptive to each other. Lance Cheama's lovely Picasso marble prairie dog watches another colony through turquoise inlaid eyes. Their underground homes are called prairie dog towns, which also provide shelter for other animals. Measurements are approximately 2" tall, 1" wide and 1" deep.

Lance comes from the greater Natewa, Dallas Quam (d) and Panteah family of noted Zuni Pueblo carvers. Other carving siblings from this family include Fabian Cheama, Arvella Cheama and Wilfred Cheama. They've been innovators in contemporary fetish carvings.
