A parent Owl is carved from tufa, a type of porous volcanic stone. Tufa can be found in areas of ancestral Puebloan land that is now Bandelier National Monument. The small owlets nestled in the breast feathers of their protector remind us of those ancient cliff dwellings at Bandelier. Lionel Sanchez carves after the style of his father-in-law Wilson Romero of Cochiti Pueblo, using found stone and minimal carving to describe the animal in the stone. This large owl with circular etched eyes is approximately 8 1/2" tall, 5" wide and 5" deep. The six darling owlets are carved from other lovely varieties of found stone.
