Jet is a natural fossilized coal derived from wood that changed under extreme pressure in times long past. It's not considered a mineral but a mineraloid. Examples of mineraloids include coal, glass and obsidian, which are materials that don't meet all the criteria of what are considered true minerals with crystal structures. Whenever Herbert Halate's gifted hands touch jet, his animal carvings seem to be poured into existence. His latest offering is an elegant Mountain-lion (panther, puma, leopard or cougar) with perceptive eyes from turquoise inlays. About 4 1/8" long, 3/4" wide and 1 1/4" tall.
