An older piece by Melvin and you can tell because it has inlaid turquoise eyes. Most of Melvin’s pieces do not have eyes (or minute detail) for which he has become known and highly collected. Melvin tells the story that he came into Keshi about 30+ years ago with a shoebox full of carvings that he said hadn’t been finished because they weren’t yet detailed. I took one look at them and said, “You’re finished!” At that time, Zuni fetishes were becoming more realistic, moving away from the old-style. Melvin’s carvings feel modern but it is in the “feel” in your hand, not the details that make them special. This Mole is classic Melvin (except for the eyes) with his polishing making the Silverado jet look metallic. Mole medicine is trusting what you feel, not what you see, as this is how Mole lives. Good medicine. The pocket or pouch sized carving measures about 1 3/4" long by 5/8" high.
