Miniature Hemsona Katsina Doll

Katsinas are powerful and immortal spirits to the Hopi Pueblo People. Katsina dolls are representations of these sacred beings and are not sacred themselves. Hemsona is the “hair hungry” katsina who shows up on all three Mesas. His work is to catch another katsina and cut off some or all of his hair. Hemsona races with a pair of sheep shears, knife or scissors in one hand. Alvin Leon's miniature representation of Hemsona katsina is from carved cottonwood detailed with pipe cleaner, feathers, fur, ribbon and embroidery thread. Including base, measurements are about 4 1/4" tall, 2 1/2" wide and 2" deep. Signed by the artist.
