In Zuni fetish carving, Medicine-bears have an arched, rounded back which resembles the cave or den opening of its home. This place is where a Bear goes to hibernate in a torpor state, rejuvenating its physical powers and activities. They teach us by their example in nature, the benefits of adequate rest to restore ourselves. Bernard Laiwakete's turquoise-eyed medicine bear is a stunning work at about 4 1/4" long, 1 1/4" wide and 3 3/4" tall. An alternating heartline, which represents the breath path from the mouth to the heart and body, is strikingly set with turquoise into a divine Purisima stone specimen chock full of amazing fossils.
