Jet is a form of fossilized coal, that is decayed wood from deep time. It's a relatively easy material to carve with but requires skill and care because it can chip. It has a hardness between 2.5 and 4 on the Mohs scale, a scale that measures the relative hardness of a mineral developed by German geologist Fredrick Mohs in the early 20th century. Rochelle Quam's joyful Horse is carved from inky black jet to a dimension of approximately 2" long, 5/8" wide and 1" tall.
