Bats are an important keystone species. Some bats feed on nectar and are important agave pollinators in New Mexico. Most eat tons of insects that damage crops and feast on mosquitos who transmit deadly viruses. The Tiwa Tanoan language word for bat is Naca chledeh translating to “moonlight flying skin". New Mexico is a permanent home and a summer stay for about 29 species of Chiroptera, approximately half of the country’s bat species. Mexican free-tailed bats at Carlsbad Caverns and other species migrate long distances to other caves throughout the Land of Enchantment, as well as to Mexico and even into South America. Stevan Natachu's marble Bat hunts by moonlight through turquoise inlaid eyes. A striking mosaic inlay is set with turquoise, jet, mother-of-pearl and spiny oyster shell. Approximately 6" wide, 1 3/4" long and 1/2" tall.
