Coyote Messenger

By Ulysses Mahkee

Animal: Coyote, Material: Pipestone
This offering is sold.

Ulysses Mahkee's animal carvings are usually etched with meaningful designs inspired from petroglyphs which are powerful symbols, astronomical records and spiritual messages by ancient Indigenous Peoples. Ulysses carves a lot in rich pipestone which is basically fossilized clay. He descends from the late Andrew Emerson Quam family of noted Zuni artists. An inspired Coyote (Wolf or Fox) from pipestone is sgraffito-etched with Deer or Elk, heartlines or breath paths, tracks, spiral and hand symbols. The heartlines are adorned with Zuni Rainbirds who are known as The Bringers Of Life, representing prayers for rain and snow. Heartfelt eyes and a decorative inlay are from turquoise. Approximately 1 7/8" long, 5/8" wide and 2 3/8" tall.
