A rich line of Zuni artists descend from the late George Cheechee Haloo. He was an important innovator who started carving in the 1930's, known for his wonderful fetish necklaces. Today, Rosita Kaamasee carries on in the traditional art with collectible fetish necklaces, honoring the family's legacy. She recently furnished us with an amazing single strand fetish necklace consisting of many skillfully carved birds and Bears, strung with lovely olive snail shell heishe beads. The delightful animals are presented in materials like purple and orange spiny oyster shell, pink and red coral, gold lip shell, abalone, turquoise, marble, lapis lazuli and mother-of-pearl. Each fetish has drilled eyes filled in with jet paste. The creatures's average in size from about 5/8" to 1 1/4" long. The overall length of this colorfully collectible fetish necklace is about 30".
