Ancient Petoskey Elephant

By Benina Kallestewa

Animal: Elephant, Material: Petoskey Stone
This offering is sold.

Present day Michigan was once located near the equator and covered by a tropical shallow sea. There vast coral colonies thrived. After being covered by sediment, the corals fossilized with their unique structures intact. It's fascinating to think what Mother Earth was like millions of years ago when these amazing corals were once alive yet are still here. Benina Kallestewa's adorable elephant has been sculpted from a wonderful Petoskey stone specimen that shows the infamous and stunning honeycomb patterns of the coral polyps. Endearing eyes are from cultured opal inlays. An offering bundle has red coral, white heishe, faceted glass and turquoise beads. About 2 1/2" long, 1/2" wide and 1 1/2" tall.
