In the old days, Zuni women retrieved water for daily needs by balancing large beautiful pottery jars called ollas on their heads. Here, three Corn-Maiden sisters share the workload, each with happy faces from overlaid gold lip shell, etched and filled with jet paste. Sculpted olla jars hold crushed turquoise to represent life-giving water. Red coral inlays abound, while a sacred Zuni Sunface symbol is set from turquoise, pipestone, jet and mother-of-pearl, representing the elements in balance. Incised stars and Dragonflies also adorn this approximately 2 1/2" tall, 2" wide and 5/8" deep stunning carving from Elisa turquoise by Kateri Quandelacy Sanchez.
