Living in groups call "troops", these communities are usually comprised of a single male gorilla, a silverback, and unrelated females, though troops with multiple males acting subordinate to the silverback has been seen in mountain gorilla populations and there are records of all male troops existing. Being a silverback comes with many responsibilities, including providing protection and leading the troop to new feeing sites. Silverbacks also act as the group mediator when conflict breakout between other members, and as such must be a strong and sure leader. Herbert Halate's incredible great ape with turquoise inlaid eyes has been carved from jet, and while this gorilla doesn't have a silver back it's upright posture presents this carving as one of expert leadership. Light etching serves as lovely fur detail and there are tiny ears hidden within the fur. This gorilla sits proud at 3 1/4" tall, 1 3/4" wide, and 1 1/2" deep. Signed by the artist.
