In Hawai‘i, sharks are highly regarded as ‘aumakua or ancestral family deities. To harm a shark is to harm a family member. A sleek shark effortlessly swims its ocean home, successful because of great hunting abilities. A powerful sea creature with softly etched gills carved from lightly fragrant Zuni cedar. Monitoring eyes are from inlaid turquoise. The majority of sharks give birth to live young yet are considered fish.
