The Indigenous Hopewell People lived during the Middle Woodland Period in Illinois between about 200 BC and 500 AD. They respected the deceased by buying them in huge sacred mounds arranged in groups. One mound burial was that of a child with a bobcat that was lovingly placed with its paws together. Its remains showed no signs of sacrifice or neglect. Evidently, it was a beloved and cared for member of the family. Ancient cultures respected wildcats and so should we. Bobcats are a keystone species. They provide an important service by keeping other animal populations in check. Delvin Leekya's wonderful Bobcat has been carved from Picasso marble and given amazing eyes from turquoise. A double point offering bundle is from iridescent abalone and Pacific green snail shell. About 2 3/4" long, 7/8" wide and 1 5/8" tall.
