Prairie dogs are a keystone species and a main food source for wildlife such as Mountain Plover birds, Burrowing Owls, Ferruginous Hawks, swift Foxes and endangered Black-footed Ferrets. Prairie dogs improve soil quality because they mix topsoil and subsoil bringing beneficial nutrients to the surface.
