The Indigenous Niitsitapi or Blackfoot People regard ammolites as having healing qualities in their tradition. Ammolites are mainly found within the Bearpaw Formation that includes Montana and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. It was once a prehistoric shallow warm sea that teemed with marine life like ammonites that became ammolites with opalized areas. Kateri Quandelacy Sanchez's Corn-Maiden is carved from a stunning ammolite with gorgeous red-orange opalized areas. Iridescent gold lip shell facial features are etched and accented with jet paste. A carved indentation represents an olla jar filled with crushed turquoise for water. About 1 3/4" long, 5/8" wide and 2" tall.
