According to A:Shiwi (Zuni) tradition, the Six-Directions are represented by protecting and healing animals with assigned colors. Working collaboratively, Stewart Quandelacy intuitively cuts and shapes the materials, also creating the inlay grooves or channels. His wife Priscilla Lasiloo Quandelacy does the gorgeous inlay work, sanding and elegant polishing of the carvings. Their extraordinary grouping hosts all six creatures. There is a jet (black) Mole, a tidgilite (yellow) Mountain-lion, a chrysocolla (blue) Bear, a watermelon serpentine (many colored) Eagle, a pipestone (red) Badger and a mother-of-pearl (white) Wolf. Each animal has expressive eyes from turquoise inlays and offering bundles that represent gratitude arranged from a colorful assortment of materials like lapis, spiny oyster shell, turquoise, coral, abalone, dolomite and branch red coral. The measurements are as follows: Wolf is approximately 1 7/8" long while bear is 1 1/8" long. Mountain lion is about 1" tall and badger is 3/8" tall. The animal's average from roughly 1/2" to 3/8" wide. The wonderful set of 6 pieces are skillfully and lovingly created, ones you can proudly hand down to the next generation.
