Robert Michael Weahkee's late grandmother Edna Leki taught him to carve out of deer antler. She was probably the first female carver at Zuni. The Weahkee family is among the oldest carving families. The earliest recorded Weahkee carver was Teddy Weahkee who worked with noted Zuni dealer C.G. Wallace in the old days. Robert's father was Anderson Weahkee whose mother was Edna Leki. Her father was Teddy Weahkee.
Created from burnished antler, the wonderful wise Owl pendant itself is about 3 1/4" long, 7/8" wide and 7/8" deep. Discerning eyes are from jet paste in turquoise. The raptor is presented on a lovely leather cord that's approximately 32" long. Golden amber and yummy lemon quartz beads are strung on the tiny offering necklace. Signed by the artist.
