Frogs are rare in the desert and sacred in Zuni where they are considered to have healing and purifying qualities. Roselle Shack's rich marble Frog has hopped in at about 2 3/8" long, 2 1/8" wide and 1/2" tall. Wide set eyes and nostril inlays are from colorful turquoise. The lovely designs on this friendly water creature are achieved by a technique of ornamentation called sgraffito in which a surface layer is incised to reveal a ground of contrasting color. It also creates a bit of wonderful texture as well. A Sunface symbol from turquoise, perhaps pipestone or another material, mother-of-pearl and jet is inlaid, representing a balance of the elements.
