Animal: Hemsona Katsina Doll, Material: Cottonwood
This offering is sold.
Katsinas are powerful and immortal spirits to the Hopi Pueblo People. Katsina dolls are representations of these sacred beings and are not sacred themselves. Hemsona is the “hair hungry” katsina who shows up on all three Mesas. His work is to catch another katsina and cut off some or all of his hair. Hemsona races with a pair of sheep shears, knife or scissors in one hand. Alvin Leon's miniature doll representation of Hemsona katsina is from carved cottonwood detailed with acrylics, feathers, pipe cleaner, embroidery thread and yarn. Including base, measurements are about 4 1/4" tall, 2" wide and roughly 2 1/8" deep. Signed by the artist.
