Great horned Owls nest in many places in New Mexico including cliff ledges. Distinctive feather tufts on the head provide a sound-reflecting surface contributing to great hearing and a larger appearance to predators. Douglas Martza's jet in turquoise-eyed raptor has been carved from picture jasper to a perched size of approximately 2 1/2" tall, 1 5/8" wide and 3/4" deep. Nearly every surface of the jasper has been beautifully etched for plumage. A tiny offering necklace is laced with perhaps melon shell or pink coral, red coral and turquoise beads.
