In the Zuni home, pottery bowls similar to this stepped-edge one would be used to store ceremonial cornmeal. They are known by many names: prayer bowl, cloud bowl and cornmeal bowl. Milford Nahohai's cosmic prayer bowl holds the universe and its harmonious system of planets, shooting stars and galactic superclusters. Dragonflies adorn the outside of the bowl which is a symbol of water, abundance and longevity. About 4 1/4" long, 4 1/2" wide and 2 7/8" tall, from hand-dug natural clay, pigments and sparkling micaceous paint. Signed by the artist who descends from a prominent pottery-making family.
