In Zuni tradition Turtles have a rain association and serve as links to Zuni ancestors. In prehistoric times, turtle or Edo:wa in the Zuni language, appeared as jewelry. Andrew Quam's layered black mother-of-pearl, turquoise and gold lip shell turtle is presented in fetish pendant form. A lovely incised carapace has been inlaid with red coral pieces. Etched claws are darkened with jet paste. A coral-eyed reptile pendant measuring about 1 3/8" long, 1" wide and 1/2" deep. Signed by the artist. The nice silver snake chain is not included but is available and sold separately here.
