In the 1980's a new and more realistic style of carving became popular. The Cheama brothers (Daniel Quam, Lance, Wilfred and Fabian) were considered the leaders of this new style. The time spent and careful attention to detail are evident in this Bison
by Fabian Cheama. With fine incising he has created the long, thick, course hair of the head and front half of the body. His careful carving has brought out the muscle definition in the legs and hind quarters, defined hooves, and swish of the tail. And even though this is a small carving (about 1 5/8" long and 7/8" tall) the facial detail and expression is remarkable. The eyes are inlaid turquoise.
