Sgraffito Bear With Dowa Yalanne

Gerald Peina's well-polished black marble Bear hosts lovely pueblo-inspired designs including Dowa Yalanne or Corn Mesa, at the base of this bear. Dowa Yalanne is a sacred location and iconic vista southeast of Zuni Pueblo.

Gerald accomplished these designs by sgraffito etching, where decoration is made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting color. Turquoise inlaid eyes and accents complete this approximate 2 1/2" long, 1/2" wide and 1 1/2" tall fetish.
