We're honored to share a collectible fishing Bear
by Vern Nieto (d) whose sons are talented carvers Travis and Frank Nieto. They come from the greater Natewa, Dallas Quam (d) and Panteah families of noted Zuni Pueblo artists. At about 3 1/4" tall, 1 3/4" wide and 2" deep, this wonderful hunting bear has been carved from Picasso marble and handsomely etched for furry detail. Turquoise eyes keep a close watch on a fish catch from turquoise, while incised powerful paws keep a firm grip. Bears have powers that we do not and are revered by Indigenous cultures. They can walk short distances on their hind legs so an upright bear is considered healing by the Zunis.
