This beautiful Bear was awarded the Second Place ribbon in the Zuni Festival Of Arts and Culture in 2019. Lorandina Sheche carved it from a beautiful warm sandstone with luscious grain pattern. She overlaid a mosaic heartline of turquoise on one side and lapis on the other. About 6" long, 3" tall, and 1 1/2" wide with big eyes on overlaid turquoise. In 1880-81 anthropologist Frank H. Cushing submitted a report to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution on Zuni fetishes complete with illustrations. Today the Sheche family carves fetishes based on those illustrations. This is a great example of this "old style" that Lorandina is well known for.
