Zunis acknowledge six directions; the four cardinal directions of North, South, East, and West, as well as Above and Below. An animal and color is assigned to each direction. In this set, carved by Jayne Quam, the animals are grouped on the MOLE, which represents the earth below.  The yellow MOUNTAIN LION, carved from picture jasper, guards the north.  A fish-rock serpentine white WOLF protects the east. A red pipestone BADGER is the guardian of the south, while the turquoise BEAR guards the west.  A many-colored EAGLE, carved from serpentine with augite, guards the heavens.  MOLE is carved from marble and the white inclusions in the mole's tail make it even more special. This group carving is about 2 1/2" long and 1" tall including the offering bundle.
