Karen Zunie comes from the greater Natewa, Dallas Quam (d) and Panteah extended family of Zuni Pueblo artists. Her sister is carver Annette Zunie Cheama. A gorgeous sandstone Turtle has been carved by Karen, approximately 2 3/4" long, 2 1/8" wide and 3/4" tall. Its turquoise-eyed head is slightly turned with nice cross-hatching detail on it. The carapace has lovely circular incising marks. A turtle (Edo:wa in the Zuni language) has always been esteemed because it carries its home on its back.
