Burt Awelagte is from the greater Othole family of accomplished Zuni Pueblo artists. His uncle is renowned carver Gibbs Othole. Burt was taught to carve by mentor Joseph Quam. Sculpted from a matrix-rich portion of Royston turquoise, a jet-eyed bushytail (Coyote, Wolf or Fox) is about 3" long, 3/4" wide and 1 5/8" tall. The matrix is the host rock surrounding the Royston turquoise, a rich golden brown that contrasts and enhances the overall appeal of the mineral. An offering bundle from a petite seashell with turquoise is somewhat loose resulting in some movement.
