At high noon when the sun is hot, a majestic Bison is usually resting, chewing cud or wallowing in the dirt. Most active during the early morning or late afternoon hours, bison continue to be a keystone species because their strong hooves aerate the soil thus cultivating seeds important to the ecosystem. In Zuni Pueblo, a Buffalo Katsina comes with a Buffalo Maiden during ceremonial dances. Master artist Fabian Cheama's turquoise-eyed bovine has been carved from serpentine measuring about 2 7/8" long, 7/8" wide and 1 1/4" tall.
