Robert Michael Weahkee's grandmother Edna Leki (d) taught him to carve his first serpent out of deer antler. She was probably the first female fetish carver at Zuni. The Weahkee family is among the oldest carving families. The earliest recorded Weahkee carver was Teddy Weahkee (d) who worked with noted Zuni dealer C.G. Wallace. Robert Michael Weahkee's father was Anderson Weahkee (d). Anderson's mother was Edna Leki and Edna's father was Teddy Weahkee.
Created from burnished antler is an incised feather tufted Owl who will watch over everything in peace and guardianship. Ever-ready eyes are from jet in turquoise inlays, while a tranquil offering necklace is strung with lapis lazuli, quartz and kyanite beads. About 3 3/4" tall, 2 1/4" wide and 2" deep.
